Roots and Borders
Imagine having to leave your home for good. Because war, discrimination, or destruction have left no room for safety. Millions of people around the world are going through exactly this experience.
The “Roots and Borders” project explores this topic and asks: What does it mean to lose your homeland? What remains when you have to leave your home to start over?
Participants learn to put themselves in the shoes of those affected. They discover how displacement and migration relate to identity and how the stories of others can connect with their own. The goal is to create a safe space where participants can also share personal experiences related to the topic.
Creative methods help make all of this visible. Participants of the youth encounter create an exhibition that will be shown at their respective schools after the project ends. They choose the format themselves: through self-portraits, video installations, or short films, they can express their emotions, thoughts, and possible prejudices, or explore topics such as the reasons why people are forced to flee.
In these training sessions, professionals learn effective methods for helping young people better understand topics related to displacement, migration, and identity.
