We're celebrating 20 years of MICC! Anniversary event and programme

In 2025, the Model International Criminal Court (MICC) will celebrate its 20th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the Kreisau-Initiative e. V. is organising a symposium on 14th June 2025, in Berlin with approximately 150 guests and speakers. The event will bring together young people, experts, partners, friends, supporters, and representatives from politics, civil society, and the nonprofit sector to discuss the role of education in protecting human rights.

The MICC’s goal is to strengthen democratic processes through human rights education. In the MICC’s meetings and training sessions, young people from different countries simulate international criminal court proceedings. In their pre-assigned roles as prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and journalists, the participants engage intensively with real crimes against humanity and international criminal law.

The MICC is more than just a simulation. It is a platform for sustainable learning, critical thinking, and active engagement. Since 2005, the programme has welcomed over 11,000 participants from 66 countries. The MICC not only provides them with valuable knowledge; it also has a lasting impact on their educational and career choices, as well as their social engagement. Numerous other projects, initiatives, social campaigns, and networks have emerged from the program – driven by participants who are committed to justice and human rights.

Programme

We are taking this milestone as an opportunity to say thank you. At the same time, we would like to look ahead: How can we shape and promote human rights education in the future? Especially in light of current societal challenges, we would like to exchange ideas and shed light on the intersection between non-formal education and the protection of human rights in today’s social contexts.

The anniversary event will be opened by Judge Reine Alapini-Gansou, Second Vice President of the International Criminal Court. The programme offers a variety of opportunities to engage with experts and MICC alumni.
